A stockman in Australia is responsible for the care and management of livestock on rural properties or stations, often while on horseback. Their duties include mustering, droving, branding, and treating injuries or illnesses of the animals. Historically, the role of the stockman emerged in the 19th century with the expansion into the interior of the continent. Aboriginal Australians have been integral to the success of many stations, contributing significant knowledge and expertise. The attire of a stockman typically includes a felt Akubra hat, cotton shirt with pockets for notebooks, moleskin trousers or jeans, and brown elastic side boots. The bond between a stockman and his horse is profound, exemplified by their relaxed and trusting stance together.

The Man from Snowy River
Inspired by Banjo Paterson’s legendary poem The Man from Snowy River, I strive to bring his vivid imagery to life through my art. The sweeping landscapes, rugged terrain, and the spirit of the bush are a constant challenge to capture on canvas, but they inspire my brushstrokes with their raw energy and timeless beauty. Each piece is my homage to the daring riders, resilient horses, and untamed wilderness that define this iconic Australian tale. I hope my work does justice to Paterson’s epic vision and resonates with those who hold a deep appreciation for the enduring spirit of the Australian outback.
Extract from Banjo Paterson poem:
When they reached the mountain's summit, even Clancy took a pull -
It well might make the boldest hold their breath.
The wild hop scrub grew thickly, and the hidden ground was full
Of wombat holes, and any slip was death.
But the man from Snowy River let the pony have his head,
And he swung his stockwhip round and gave a cheer,
And he raced him down the mountain like a torrent down its bed,
While the others stood and watched in very fear.
He sent the flint stones flying, but the pony kept his feet,
He cleared the fallen timbers in his stride,
And the man from Snowy River never shifted in his seat —
It was grand to see that mountain horseman ride.
Through the stringy barks and saplings, on the rough and broken ground,
Down the hillside, at a racing pace, he went.
And he never drew the bridle till he landed safe and sound,
At the bottom of that terrible descent.
